Status Definitions:

The pool of 2007 Challengers is considered here to be teams whose status is either "Officially Accepted", "Publicly Announced and Active", or "Emerging". It is an optimistic estimate of the number of challengers, assuming all active efforts can be sustained.

Officially Accepted:  Team has been accepted by SNG/Alinghi as an official challenger.

Announced and Active: Team has made outright public statements that they are going to be a 2007 challenger, has described in detail resources and personnel.  Pre-existing team or new team is showing solid activity designing, fundraising, recruiting, or training.  Strong possibility of becoming a challenger.

Emerging: Team leaders have made comments of intent and some reports of substance regarding recruitment, organization, and funding are heard, but definitive announcements have not been made.  Likelihood of become a 2007 challenger appears to be increasing.

Uncertain Continuing Status: Existing Team has not made definitive statements or actions that show they are active as a challenger for the next Cup, or previous activity is now on hold.  May be pursuing funding, but not seen to be currently acquiring personnel or resources.  May or may not challenge.

Dock Talk: Hinted, Rumored, Leaked, Unconfirmed, or just plain Imagined.  There are reports from some sources, possibly from the principals themselves, suggesting that a team might be forming or that feasibility is being explored.

Low Profile: News previously heard about potential of challenging, but no new information has been available for some time; could be in, could be out, but publicly visible momentum as a challenger candidate is not building.

Confirmed out:  Team leadership has made a public statement that they will not challenge for 2007.

Caveats:  As veteran Cup watchers know, our "Probable" number of 2007 Challengers is optimistic.  If all of the publicly active teams made it to the starting line intact, it would be a first for the Louis Vuitton Cup.  However, predicting which teams might merge or withdraw is not necessarily an easy task, at least if accuracy is desired.  In the past, teams that appeared to have solid financial backing sometimes foundered at the last minute while smaller upstarts made it to the regatta right on schedule.  This list will consider an active team to be "in" until they actually declare themselves to be "out".
