On a recent trip to New York City (Sunday, 6/18/06) we were on the observation deck at 30 Rock Plaza (which was only quite recently open to the public).

There was a small commotion behind me -- look about and there are a bunch of official folks with a photographer...and a battered Louis Vuitton trunk...and the AMERICA’S CUP!!!

One of my longstanding hobbies is photography, and on this day I had none of my digital SLRs, just a good point-and-shoot.  Wouldn't you know it?  I took essentially the same pics that the photographer took.  I guess it was an advertising shoot.

I also thought these shots looked especially cool because of the late afternoon light -- about 6:30 pm in New York.  No doubt the official photographer felt the same way.

One other side note....several years ago, not too long after Team New Zealand won the cup in San Diego, I was back in NZ and made a pilgrimage out to the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron to see the Cup. I was invited in and asked to wait. Another member came out to apologize that it just would not work that day! The America's Cup was the feature display in a lunch meeting at the squadron...and they could not be disturbed.  Fair enough.  Strike one.

My next trip back to New Zealand included another visit to the RNZYS, but an agitated Maori had other plans for that visit, beating it up days before my arrival. Strike two.

Thus my surprise at this happening at Rockefeller Center in NYC. It was quite the epiphany.  In fact before taking any shots, I went up really close and scrutinized it, as I was sure it was a fake for display purposes only!

Well that's about it.  As I said before, it was indeed a “had to be there” moment.
