Alinghi Wins Louis Vuitton Act Seven Overall

BMW Oracle Leads in Points among the Challengers

 Alinghi Wins in Tiebreaker

Racing Cancelled for Day 3

From AmericasCup.com: "Light winds and thick fog have forced the cancellation of the final race of the Malmö-Skåne Louis Vuitton Act 7 this afternoon. At 13:00 Principal Race Officer Peter Reggio issued the cancellation.

Alinghi and BMW Oracle Racing share top position with identical scores of 1, 2, 4 after three races, but the Swiss Defender, Alinghi, wins the regatta on tiebreak by virtue of having the better score (a victory) in the last race sailed. Luna Rossa in third, Emirates Team New Zealand in fourth and Desafío Español in fifth round out the top of the table."

Racing in Malmö is now complete and the boats and crews will head to Trapani, Italy, to prepare for Acts 8 & 9.

K-Challenge took a first place in the first race of the day. They sailed the race brilliantly from beginning to end. The team finally realized its full capabilities, proving that all the hard work since Louis Vuitton Acts 4 & 5 in Valencia has really paid off.

Stephan
Kandler, CEO of K-Challenge, declares: “It has been a very beautiful day, and a reward for all the work that has been carried out for the past 3 and a half years. We showed that we are able to be competitive and play with larger teams, even though we currently have one of the lowest budgets of all the teams in the 32nd America’s Cup. I believe that this victory confirms that the potential is there and with the support of sponsors, we will be there in 2007 with all the equipment and experience necessary to compete at the highest level. We are very happy and proud today, but will continue to work hard.”

Standings Tight at Top After Day 2

Light but steady 8-knot breezes and clear blue skies greeted the large spectator fleet that came out to watch Saturday’s thrilling first race on the Øresund. It was fairy-tale stuff for the French team of K-Challenge, who took the lead by the first mark and held off the attentions of BMW ORACLE Racing for an inspiring victory. Alinghi made a good charge up the fleet, finishing fourth after being forced to go back and restart.

The wind was still blowing 7 to 8 knots for the beginning of the second race, but it soon built to 14 knots and shifted slightly to the left. Luna Rossa charged across the top of the fleet from the left-hand side and the Italians were leading from Alinghi for the next lap. Then the Italian genoa broke and the Swiss pounced as the Italians fought to replace the shredded sail. Luna Rossa recovered quickly, but Alinghi won the race comfortably.

The results leave Alinghi and BMW ORACLE Racing with identical scorlines at the top of the table. Luna Rossa, Emirates Team New Zealand and Desafío Español are in touch, but will struggle to overhaul both leaders.
