J Class: Yankee JH3

Yet another J class yacht is to be build in the Netherlands.

In the first decades of the 19th century several syndicates were building J-Class yachts.

On September 23rd 2010, some eighty years later, Simon Dierdorp, chief of the syndicate will commission Holland Jachtbouw to build Yankee J-H3.

Yankee was first designed in the thirties of the previous century and has now been re-designed by Dijkstra and Partners in accordance with current J-class standards.

Yankee participated in the round robins of the 1930 Americas Cup. Designed by Frank C. Paine and commissioned by John S. Lawrence and Chandler Hovey. She was later sold to Gerard Lambert.

In August 2010, the syndicate commissioned Gerard Dijkstra to redesign Yankee in accordance with the original design of Frank C. Paine, but as an aluminum yacht with carbon mast, rigging and 3DL sails.

Yankee is to be constructed in accordance with Lloyds A1 and MCA to allow her to be used for both racing and chartering.  Building the hull will commence October 2010 at Bloemsma Aluminiumbouw in Makkum (NED).

A unique feature will be Yankee’s propulsion, with a main engine of 325 kW, a 50 kW generator and a 32 kW auxiliary generator. The interior design is based on a permanent crew of seven and, for racing purposes, accommodation in pipe cots for another 21 crew members.

Yankee will be launched early 2012 and will be ready to take part in the J-Class regattas in the UK June and July 2012.

Building Yankee
In 2011 the hull of Yankee will be delivered to Holland Jachtbouw in Zaandam. Following the construction of world-famous yachts such as Windrose of Amsterdam (152 ft.), Christoffels Lighthouse (90 ft.), Whisper (115 ft.), Skylge (141 ft.), YII (121 ft.) and most recently the world’s largest private schooner Athos (203 ft.), this represents another huge challenge for this leading yard.

Yankee will be built in a state-of-the-art production hall (70 x 20 m). Holland Jachtbouw is currently also building the J-Class yacht Rainbow.

2012 J-Class regattas in the UK
Yankee will first test her performance against the other J-Class yachts during the Falmouth Regatta, four races organized by the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club. The following yachts are expected to also be present: Shamrock (1930), Velsheda (1933), Endeavour (1934), Ranger (2002), Hanuman (2009), Lionheart (2010) and Rainbow (2012).

After the J-Class regattas are finished, Yankee will be available for charter during the Olympic Games.
